I am so sorry for the loss of Carl. It is never easy to lose someone we love. We have the promise that God is near to us. Ps. 34:18 says "God is close to the brokenhearted; he saves those who are crushed in spirit."

Mark, Nan and family,
So sorry to hear of Carl's passing. I met Carl back in the 1980's when I was selling seed corn for Pioneer. The first time I met him I was impressed with his friendly smile and a good firm hand shake. Truly a fine gentleman. He will surely be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him and calling him friend.
May you find comfort in the many memories that you have. Strength be with you all. With deepest sympathy.

As I read the memory of Michael Lederer, last night,it brought back many old menories,of Carl's family and my family. Both of our families came to the Schoharie area, about the same time, from Germany. My family came here a bit before Carl's. But what made Michael's memory so sweet for me, was the fact ,how he mentioned his grandmother, Herta and his mother, Johanna. Carl's family was very close friends, with my grandparents, Andreas and Elisabeth Benninger. I remember them all very well, and being at my grandparents home many different times.
I'm hoping that Johanna is still alive, and will be at Carl's funeral. I would love to visit with her, and also Carl's brother, Hermann who I've never met.
I remember my father taking Carl, a tractor trailer load of straw, a time or two. We also sold him fertilizer too. My father hauled the one silo, up there to Carl's years ago too. It was only half of the original silo, the other half went to Keith Saddlemire's farm on Barton Hill Road. Carl rented my big 53 foot grain and hay elevator, for about five years in a row, to fill his corn crib every fall.
I must also say,, Michael was right, about Carl being a very good looking man, and having that twinkle in his eye. He sure always did look like that too. My deepest condolences to the Stolzenburg family and his relatives. Rest in peace, Carl.

To the family of Carl, deepest sympathy. He has been a part of my life since I can remember. My Mom, Cathy, consider Carl a dear friend. Every summer he brought surplus tomatoes & cukes to the house traveling by golf cart. He will be missed by many.

Carl’s father Herbert, and my maternal grandmother, Herta Stolzenburg, were brother and sister. So I am a generation younger than Carl. I grew up in California, quite far from “the farm,” but so often I would hear about it from my mother Johanna, and my grandmother Herta, as if they were describing Shangra-la itself. It was a place of family, of honest work, of deepening roots, and of love. And while I came to know Carl — not nearly as well as I now wish — I knew him less as the man than as the myth. Because he and his wife Faye, his brother Herman and wife Thelma, they did for me what the best myths do. They stood for so much more than themselves. Again...family, roots. Of all the treasure stories we hear as children, there are no greater treasures than those. And as I moved in life again and again, and still again, I always knew there was a branch of my family that had committed to one place, and to each other. I had to get older before I began to appreciate what that really meant. When I did see Carl, a couple of times at the farm but more often when he and Faye would visit my mother in California, I always thought he was about the best looking guy I’d ever seen. Chiseled jaw, sparkling eyes, thick hair, steady as a rock with such great humor and clear sense of purpose. So in a way, he was a hero of mine. And as I’ve learned how loved he was by his large family, friends, and community, I understand that he was a hero to so many. Rest in peace, Carl. And thank you!
